“A Very Married Woman” by Jack Vettriano depicts a couple after a rendezvous. Both are only half dressed, the female is standing in front of a mirror fixing her long brown hair, only wearing a skirt and a black bra, with her back to the viewer. We can see the profile of her lover who is sitting either on a bed or chair, smoking a cigarette. He has not put his shirt back on, and they probably finished making love only moments ago. He seems worried, rather than relaxed, as he is cradling his forehead in his hands, deep in thought - or is he riddled with guilt? The title of the picture suggests that the female shown in the picture is not his own wife, and so it’s probable that he is agonizing about being caught - if her husband finds out that she is having an affair with him.
